The Best Crab Rangoon Dip

What makes crab rangoons addictive? The contrast of a crisp wrapper and a silky filling, the savory bite of crab or imitation crab, bright green onions, and that sweet-and-spicy dipping sauce. This crab rangoon dip captures all those flavors in a warm, shareable dish.

The flavor, simplified. This dip tastes like classic crab rangoon but is easier to prepare for a crowd. It combines softened cream cheese with mayo and sour cream as a creamy base, folded together with crab, melted cheeses, green onions, Worcestershire, garlic, and a touch of sriracha for heat. Baked until bubbly and golden on top, it’s best served with crisp homemade wonton chips or your favorite crackers.

Why choose this dip: It’s quick to gather ingredients, simple to assemble, and scalable for gatherings. Use real crab for a delicate, fresh flavor or imitation crab for affordability and convenience—the recipe works beautifully either way.

What Is Imitation Crab?

Imitation crab, often labeled surimi, is a processed seafood product typically made from pollock. It’s flavored and shaped to resemble crab meat and can be a cost-effective option for dips, salads, and cold preparations.

Ingredient Notes

  • Crab meat: Real crab offers a fresh seafood taste and higher protein per ounce; imitation crab is economical and holds up well in mixed dishes.
  • Cream cheese and cheese: The base relies on soft cream cheese. Combine with shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan for creaminess and a golden top. Allow the cream cheese to come to room temperature for easy mixing.
  • Mayonnaise and sour cream: These smooth the texture and add richness. Light versions are acceptable; avoid nonfat products for best texture.
  • Seasonings: Green onions, Worcestershire sauce, minced garlic, and sriracha recreate the familiar rangoon profile. Adjust sriracha to taste.
  • Wonton wrappers: Homemade baked wonton chips are crisp and ideal for scooping. Tortilla chips, crackers, or keto/gluten-free alternatives all work.

How to make crab rangoon dip

1. Make the dippers. For crisp wonton chips, cut wonton wrappers diagonally into triangles, arrange in a single layer on a baking sheet, and lightly spray with olive oil or nonstick spray. Bake at 350ºF for 7–8 minutes, watching carefully so they brown but don’t burn.

2. Mix the base. In a large bowl, blend room-temperature cream cheese with mayonnaise and sour cream until smooth. An electric mixer speeds this step and ensures a silky dip.

3. Add the flavorings. Chop or shred the crab into small pieces. Stir in crab, half the mozzarella, Parmesan, green onions, Worcestershire sauce, sriracha, and minced garlic until evenly distributed.

4. Bake. Spread the mixture into an 8- or 9-inch square baking dish, sprinkle the remaining mozzarella over the top, and bake at 350ºF for 20–25 minutes until warmed through, bubbling, and slightly golden at the edges. Avoid overbaking to keep the texture smooth and cohesive.

5. Serve. Garnish with extra chopped green onions and, if desired, drizzle sweet chili sauce over the top. Serve immediately with wonton chips and additional sweet chili sauce for dipping.

Recipe Variations

  • Microwave option: Place the assembled dip in a microwave-safe dish and heat on high until warmed and the cheese melts, checking and stirring every 30–60 seconds.
  • Serve chilled: For a cold dip version, skip baking and refrigerate the mixture, serving it chilled with crackers or chips—refreshing for warm weather events.
  • Alternative dippers: Swap baked wonton chips for tortilla chips, pretzel bites, or your favorite crackers. Use gluten-free or low-carb chips to fit dietary needs.

Storage Tips

Store leftover dip in the refrigerator for up to two days in a covered container. Reheat portions in the microwave in 30-second intervals until warm. Discard any dip left out at room temperature for more than two hours.

If you love crab rangoons, try this crab rangoon dip. It’s creamy, cheesy, and perfect with homemade wonton chips and sweet chili sauce.

Ingredients

Wonton chips

  • 1 package (12 ounces) wonton wrappers, cut in half diagonally
  • nonstick spray or olive oil spray

Dip

  • 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup sour cream
  • 8 ounces crab meat or imitation crab meat
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella, divided
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • ¼ cup finely chopped green onion (about 3)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sriracha hot chili sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • sweet chili sauce (for serving, optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350ºF. Arrange wonton wrappers on a baking sheet in a single layer and spray with nonstick spray or olive oil spray. Bake for 7 to 8 minutes or until golden brown and crisp. Set aside while you make the dip.
  • Leave the oven on 350ºF for the dip. Spray an 8- or 9-inch square baking dish with nonstick spray and set aside.
  • In a large bowl, combine cream cheese, mayonnaise, and sour cream and stir until smooth. An electric mixer helps blend the cream cheese completely.
  • If using imitation crab, lightly mash it with a fork or mince it. Add the crab to the bowl along with half the mozzarella, Parmesan, green onion, Worcestershire sauce, sriracha, and minced garlic. Stir well to combine.
  • Spread the mixture into the prepared pan and top with the remaining ½ cup mozzarella. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden around the edges and bubbling. Do not overbake.
  • Serve immediately with wonton chips, crackers, or tortilla chips. Drizzle sweet chili sauce on top if desired.

Notes

  • Cream cheese: Soften to room temperature for the smoothest dip. Reduced-fat cream cheese may be used; avoid nonfat to preserve texture.
  • Make ahead: Assemble the dip and refrigerate, covered, for up to 2 days. Bake when ready. Store baked or unbaked wonton chips in an airtight container once cooled.
  • Storage: Refrigerate leftovers up to two days. Reheat in the microwave in 30-second intervals until warm. Discard any dip left at room temperature for longer than two hours.
