On the way to the airport last week we made a couple of quick stops: first for a muffin at Gingerbread Construction Company, and then at New Deal Fruit in Revere to sample their well-known subs and browse the Italian grocery selection.
The produce at New Deal Fruit was noticeably fresher and more appealing than what I’ve been seeing in regular supermarkets lately. Fruits and vegetables looked vibrant, and prices were refreshingly reasonable.
They had giant stalks of celery for $2.50. I couldn’t help but compare them to the much smaller, pricier celery I saw last winter at another store—this was a clear win for value and quality.
They even offered “spotted bananas” at $0.20 a pound. In my opinion that’s the best time to buy bananas—when they’re sweet and fully flavored. My husband, on the other hand, prefers his bananas with a little green left on them, which I always find a bit odd.
The shop carries a lovely selection of packaged Italian cookies and cakes—perfect for gifting or enjoying with coffee.
Look at those thick rigatoni noodles—plump and enticing. I didn’t have room in my carry-on, but I definitely plan to stock up the next time we’re nearby, perhaps on our way to the Cape this fall.
Check out those cheese logs!
They had impressive cheese loaves—visually striking and tempting. Some of the specialty cheeses and prepared items looked like they’d make great additions to an appetizer spread.
On a shelf I spotted almond syrup. I’m not completely sure how everyone uses it—likely in desserts or beverages—but it’s now on my list of items to try at home.
But the main reason we stopped was the deli counter—and it did not disappoint.
A few years ago my husband watched a video online about their subs, and ever since he’s mentioned wanting to visit. The place lives up to that reputation.
The sandwich selection felt endless; it’s easy to imagine regulars popping in weekly or even daily for their favorite sub.
The deli counter is enormous, and choosing a sandwich was a tough call. In the end I went with the “Joe DiMaggio” sub—a full Italian sub with sausage, red peppers, and onions.
The Girl ordered the “Rosemary” sub with rosemary ham, Swiss cheese, red pepper, and oil and vinegar. Both sandwiches were fantastic. We ate them in the airport parking lot rather than bring strong-smelling food on the plane—something I always try to avoid when traveling.
If you’re ever in Revere, Massachusetts, or have extra time before a flight, stop by New Deal Fruit. Between the fresh produce, Italian groceries, and impressive deli, it’s worth a visit.
Have a great day everyone,
