I spent more than two decades of my life without children. There are countless photos of me traveling and enjoying life—no kids in sight. Thanks to Momnesia, that chapter of my life feels like it belongs to someone else.
Momnesia isn’t necessarily negative. Like amnesia, it gently erases the memory of a time when you only had one person to care for—you. Motherhood changes everything. Although every mom’s journey is unique, many of the experiences we share—both joyful and challenging—give us common ground.
I love when moms take a typical situation and find the humor in it. One of my favorite formats is the “You Know You’re a Mom When” meme.
Below are a few of my favorite “You Know You’re a Mom When” moments. I’ve related to every one of these at some point in my parenting years. Can you relate to any of them? How would you finish the sentence “You know you’re a mom when…”? Share yours in the comments.
- You can’t remember the last time you went to the bathroom without an audience.
- You try to close and lock the bathroom door for a few minutes of privacy—and this happens:
- You realize you’ve just watched an entire episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse by yourself.
- Going to the grocery store without kids feels like a mini-vacation.
- You haven’t slept through the night in years.
- Getting up at 7 AM qualifies as “sleeping in.”
- At the end of the day you discover dried baby spit-up on your shoulder.
- You fantasize about going to bed—often.
- You don’t carry a regular purse anymore—diaper bags have taken over.
- You have fed a baby while sitting on the toilet.
The short film “The Mother ‘Hood” made me laugh and cry. It captures many of the parenting stereotypes we encounter every day, plus the quick judgments we make about each other. Then something happens that reminds us, no matter how different our parenting choices are, we all share one very important thing in common. I don’t want to spoil it for you—watch it and see for yourself:
